Stroll through exhibits at the Sunrise Visitor’s Center and then hike one of many trails available from this location. Consider the 8-mile Sourdough Ridge Trail that is rated as an easy hike, but note that the trail has an elevation gain of 1,000 feet. You can always hike part of the way and come back down if time is limited.
Suggested Time in Town: 4 Hours
After your hike, grab some snacks and drinks at the Day Lodge and break out your lawn chairs or blanket for a parking lot stargazing adventure. Depending on which month you’re visiting, the sun can set anywhere from 8 pm to 10 pm, so plan accordingly and get ready for an amazing experience. Headlamps are helpful, however, use only when absolutely needed as it will reduce your night vision substantially.
Rainier Tip: As summer offers gorgeous wildflower displays, setting up for stargazing is NOT ALLOWED in the surrounding meadows as it will damage the wildflowers.
Suggested Time in Longmire: 4 to 6 Hours
