Emerging from miles of hilly timberlands, the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway (Hwy. 101) descends back toward sea level and a more aquatic landscape. Head to Raymond’s Riverfront Park (adjacent to the Northwest Carriage Museum) for an easy launch on the Willapa River. Depending on the tides, head upriver or toward the oyster-famed bay. Paddle under and around the through-truss bridge of the former Northern Pacific Railroad on the South Fork. Watch eagles feeding and salmon jumping. Kayak rentals and guided excursions are offered by Willapa Paddle Adventures. Best to reserve ahead of time.
