At 5.5 miles long, the Dungeness Spit is the longest naturally occurring sand spit in North America. Part of the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge, it is a haven for wildlife, with over 250 species of birds, 41 species of land mammals, and 8 species of marine mammals recorded at the refuge, many of which are threatened or endangered.
